Good evening, everyone
Happiness is the path
We often convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, after we have a child, and then, after we have another. Later, we feel frustrated because our children are not yet old enough, and we think we will be better off when they are. We are then convinced that we will be happier once they have passed that stage.
We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when things get better for our partner, when we have a nicer car or a bigger house, when we can go on vacation, when we retire.
The truth is that there is no better time to be happy than the present moment. If not now, when? Life will always be full of challenges to overcome and projects to complete. It is better to admit that and decide to be happy now, while there is still time.
For a long time, I thought my life was finally about to begin. The real life! But there was always an obstacle in the way, a problem that had to be solved first, an unfinished theme, a time to wait out, a debt to pay. And then, there, life was going to begin! Until I realized that those obstacles were precisely my life.
This perspective helped me understand that there is no path that leads to happiness. Happiness is the path. So, make the most of every moment we have, and even more so when we share that moment with someone special—someone special enough to share our time with—and remember that time does not wait. Therefore, stop waiting to finish your studies, to get a raise, to get married, to have children, for your children to leave the house, or simply for Friday night, Sunday morning, spring, summer, autumn, or winter, to decide that there is no better time than now to be happy.
HAPPINESS IS A TRAJECTORY AND NOT A DESTINATION.
It doesn’t take much to be happy. You just need to appreciate every little moment and crown it as one of the best moments of your life:
To fall in love,
Laughing until your stomach aches or your jaw cramps
Finding a pile of new emails in your inbox when you get back from vacation
Drive into magnificent landscapes in uncharted territory,
Going to bed in your bed while listening to the rain falling outside,
Getting out of the shower and drying off with a nice hot towel,
Passing your final exam,
To have an interesting conversation,
Finding money in a pair of pants you haven’t worn in ages
Laughing at oneself,
Laughing for no particular reason,
Happening to overhear someone say something nice about you
Waking up in the middle of the night and realizing you can still sleep for a few more hours
Listening to a song that reminds us of a cherished moment,
Making new friends,
To see the people we love
Visiting an old friend and realizing that nothing has changed between you,
Watching a sunset,
Getting a quiet back massage and falling peacefully asleep,
To feel a soft, cool breeze caress our cheek,
Hearing that we are loved and peacefully living through all the little moments that warm our hearts and souls.
True friends come in good times when you call them, and in bad times, they come on their own.
After that, some serious reflection is in order. …
