1990: Ava Gardner, the last mythical star of Hollywood whom we had nicknamed “the most beautiful woman in the world,” dies in London at the age of 67. In 1941, Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM, had her sign her first contract for $50 a week. Film after film, she forged her legend as an inaccessible femme fatale, in search of an absolute that no man could give her. In 1954, the actress filmed The Barefoot Contessa, and some saw in this film an allegorical biography of the star. She was the wife of Mickey Rooney, the conductor and clarinetist Artie Shaw, and the singer-actor Frank Sinatra.
