My previous employer had told me not to hesitate to get in touch with them again if I wanted to come back, which is what I just did.

Reach out to your former employer, but I’m not sure they’ll rehire you given the economic climate, so I’d say you’ve got a slim chance…
On the other hand, I can see you finding a new job elsewhere within the next three to four months.
My advice is to bear your troubles with patience, for a salary is better than nothing at all, even though things are going badly, and keep looking for a job.
