The Magician, this card is called either the Magician or the Magician, and it represents self-awareness, eloquence or the art of writing, an attraction to new ideas, and the willingness to take risks. It also implies submission to occult forces, and reversed, it can signify cheating and misuse of occult forces.
The Magician, with his symbolic tools and colorful garments, is a master of his art. He wears multicolored clothes and a large hat with a brim shaped like an eight, which is said to represent the cosmic lemniscate of ancient Egypt, a symbol of eternal life. In his left hand, he holds a small stick or wand, or perhaps a tool derived from the caduceus, the traditional staff or wand of Hermes or Mercury, the messenger of the gods.
Before him, his tools are laid out on a table, among which are the symbols of the four suits: the cup, the knife (sword), the coin, and the wand.
In some games, the Jester wears a solid belt, but others emphasize the duality of this card by giving him a belt that is a snake biting its own tail. This is the symbol of eternal truth, self-knowledge, duality, personal union with the divine, power, subtlety, and diplomacy. On the negative side (reversed), it represents occult power and its misuse, domination, deception, cheating, and lies.
The Magician, or Mage, juggles the symbols of the four elements: writing, will, and wisdom.
