Reversed card
Also reversal · inverted card · upside-down card
A reversed card is a card that appears upside down once turned over in the spread. Readers are divided on how to treat it: some give it a weakened, blocked or internalized meaning, others an opposite one, and still others ignore orientation and set every card upright. Reading reversals appeared in late 18th-century cartomancy with Etteilla and became widespread in the 19th and 20th centuries. What matters is to settle on a convention before the reading.
