The Empress
Also Arcanum III
The Empress is Major Arcanum III of the tarot. It shows a sovereign seated facing forward, holding a scepter and a shield bearing an eagle. Upright, it is read as creativity, fertility in the broad sense, expression, charm and intelligence in motion: what is born and grows. Reversed, the tradition evokes a project that bears no fruit, vanity, blocked expression or excessive control. It forms a pair with The Emperor, its masculine counterpart.
