Spreading the cards

Spreading the cards means laying the deck face down on the table, in a line, an arc or a fan, so that cards can be picked from it. More broadly, the term also refers to placing the drawn cards according to the chosen layout. Spreading the deck gives the querent equal access to every card, and it is part of the ritual of many tarot readers.
