Haruspicy
Also haruspex · extispicy · hepatoscopy
Haruspicy is the divinatory art of examining the entrails of sacrificed animals, especially the liver, to read the will of the gods. Practiced in Mesopotamia, where clay liver models have been found, it was brought to a high degree of refinement by the Etruscans, then adopted by Rome, which called on Etruscan haruspices. The Liver of Piacenza, a bronze model divided into regions assigned to deities, is a famous example. It is a historical practice that disappeared along with Roman religion.
