Quintessence

In tarot reading, the quintessence is the Major Arcanum obtained by adding up the numbers of the cards in a reading and then reducing the total to 22 or less. It is read as a synthesis card that sums up the overall tone of the reading or provides its key. The technique is not part of the tarot’s early practice; it stems from the twentieth-century numerological tradition and is not used by all practitioners.
