Hydromancy

Hydromancy is divination by water: observing its surface, its reflections and its movements, the ripples caused by an object dropped into it, or the circles that form. It is attested in many ancient cultures, and certain springs and fountains were reputed to be oracular. It includes more specific forms, such as lecanomancy, which observes oil poured into a basin of water. Like crystallomancy, it belongs to the practices of surface gazing.
