Marie-Anne Lenormand

Also Mlle Lenormand · Mademoiselle Lenormand · the Sibyl of the Faubourg Saint-Germain

Marie-Anne Adélaïde Lenormand (1772-1843) was a French cartomancer, the most famous of her time, born in Alençon and settled in Paris on the rue de Tournon. Her clients are said to have included major figures of the Revolution and the Empire, among them Empress Joséphine, as she herself recounted in several books, such as Souvenirs prophétiques d’une sibylle (1814). She ran into trouble with the police on several occasions. After her death, her name was put on decks she had not created, including the Petit Lenormand and the Grand Jeu.
